When you’re dealing with flammable or explosive vapors, one tiny spark or a lamp tube popping can turn a workday into a disaster. We don’t take that risk. Instead, we wrap the heating element in a dedicated quartz glass shield. It’s a simple fix that keeps the heat in and the danger out.
Why Quartz?
We use high-purity quartz for the outer shield because it handles heat without warping and lets the IR radiation slide right through. The heat goes straight to your workpiece, and the shield doesn’t soak up too much of it. Think of it as a bodyguard. It stops corrosive fumes from eating away at the lamp’s seals and keeps accidental splashes from hitting the hot glass. And if the inner lamp actually bursts? The shield catches the debris. It stops the filament from ever touching those volatile liquids.
The Tricky Part: Getting the Fit Right
You can’t just slide a tube into a sleeve and call it a day. It’s a balancing act. If the fit is too tight, the heat builds up, the glass stresses, and—crack—there goes your shield. But if the gap is too wide, the lamp doesn’t have the support it needs. We spend a lot of time getting those tolerances just right. Plus, you’ve got to think about the seals at the entry points to keep things airtight. And a quick tip: check your mounting brackets. If you use standard carbon steel in a chemical wash, it’ll rust away in no time, no matter how fancy your quartz shield is. Use something non-reactive.
The Reality Check
Here’s the catch: adding this extra layer of safety does kill a little bit of the heat flux. You might find you need a lamp with a slightly higher wattage to make up for that loss. Just make sure to double-check your power supply before you bump up the wattage, otherwise you’ll be dealing with a different kind of headache.
