
Stop Wasting Heat on Your Clean Room Bench
If you’ve ever spent time heating silicon wafers, you know the frustration. You’re pumping power into an infrared lamp, but a huge chunk of that energy is just… vanishing. Standard lamps throw heat in every direction. Without a solid reflector, about half your energy is just baking the housing of your bench instead of actually hitting the wafer. It’s a waste of power and a headache for your cooling system. That’s why we use gold-coated reflectors. Why gold? It sounds fancy, but it’s purely about the physics. Gold is incredible at bouncing infrared light. Aluminum is a cheaper alternative, sure, but it just can’t keep up when things get hot. The gold coating catches all that backward radiation from the quartz tube and shoves it right back down toward the wafer. It turns a scattered glow into a tight, focused beam. You get way more heat exactly where you need it, without having to crank up the wattage and stress your equipment. Getting the heat density right The goal is a fast ramp-up. You want that wafer at temperature now, not in ten minutes. By using these gold housings, we make sure every single watt of electricity actually does its job. It’s efficient. It’s fast. And because it’s so effective, the whole heating assembly can be smaller and less bulky. But here is the catch: gold is a bit of a diva. It hates contamination. If your clean room protocols slip and some oil or chemicals land on that reflector, your reflectivity tanks. You’ll start noticing the heat isn’t hitting the wafer evenly, and that’s usually the first sign that your reflector needs a look. A few tips for the setup We designed these to be easy. They’re drop-in replacements, so you can swap them into your current bench without spending your afternoon recalibrating the Z-axis height. One quick warning on the wiring: match your power supply to the lamp’s voltage exactly. I’ve seen people try to “over-volt” a lamp to make up for a dirty reflector. Don’t do that. You’ll just burn out the filament way too soon. Just keep the gold surface clean, and the heat will stay steady and reliable.
